FEATURES / Object Tags & Metadata
/// Object Tags & Metadata
Edit S3 tags and metadata. Without the console.
View and update object tags and user-defined metadata through a visual key-value editor. Inline editing, instant save, applied to AWS immediately.
Start for freeEvery tag. Every metadata field. Edit inline, save once.
/// How it works
Open any object
Select any object in the file browser and open its detail panel. Switch to the Tags or Metadata tab to see all current key-value pairs.
Edit, add, or remove
Edit existing values inline, add new key-value pairs with the + Add row, or delete keys you no longer need. Changes are staged until you save.
Save — applied to S3 immediately
Hit Save and Storafleet applies all staged changes to the S3 API in one request. Tags and metadata are updated immediately — no deploy step required.
Tags and metadata in one view
Switch between the Tags tab and the Metadata tab for any object. See all key-value pairs at once — system metadata alongside your custom x-amz-meta-* values.
Inline editing
Click any value to edit it inline. Add new key-value pairs with a single row. Delete with one click. Save changes when ready — applied to S3 immediately.
Applied instantly
Tag updates are sent to the S3 API the moment you save. No page reload, no intermediate steps. Changes take effect for IAM conditions and cost allocation immediately.
Why tags matter
S3 tags are used for IAM condition-based access control, lifecycle rule scoping, and AWS Cost Explorer cost allocation. Storafleet makes managing them as easy as editing a spreadsheet.
View tags across objects
See tag values per object in the file browser list view. Spot untagged objects or objects with outdated tag values without opening each one individually.
Cost allocation tags
Tag objects with team, project, or environment values. When you activate these as AWS cost allocation tags, Cost Explorer can break S3 spend by tag — finally making per-team billing accurate.
/// Without Storafleet
Editing S3 object tags requires navigating to the object in the Console, clicking through 3 screens, and re-typing key-value pairs one at a time.
- AWS Console requires 4 clicks to open an object's tag editor
- No way to see all tags across a prefix without a script or S3 Inventory
- Updating metadata on an existing object requires a server-side copy — the Console doesn't make this obvious
- Bulk tag updates require the CLI or a custom script
- No single view of both tags and user-defined metadata for the same object
/// With Storafleet
Open any object, see all tags and metadata in one view, edit inline, save once.
- Tags and metadata in a single tabbed view per object
- Inline edit for any key-value pair — no extra clicks
- Add and delete tags without re-reading the AWS docs for the request format
- Bulk tag update across a prefix — select, update, save
- Changes applied immediately — IAM conditions and cost allocation tags updated at once

Tagging objects for lifecycle rule scoping
You want a lifecycle rule that only applies to objects tagged env=staging. The objects in the staging bucket aren't tagged yet. You bulk-tag them through Storafleet — select the prefix, add the tag, done. The lifecycle rule now works correctly.

Adding cost allocation tags to understand per-client spend
You store files for multiple clients in the same bucket, separated by prefix. You tag each client's objects with client=acme or client=globalcorp. Once activated in AWS, Cost Explorer shows per-client S3 spend — you can invoice accurately.

Updating metadata on a batch of objects
An old content type was set incorrectly on 200 objects — they're labeled text/plain but should be application/json. The fix requires updating user metadata on each object. Storafleet lets you select the prefix and update the metadata in bulk.
